Sports massage is a special form of massage and consists of specific
components designed to reduce injuries, alleviate inflammation, provide
warm-up, etc. typically used by amateur and professional athletes
before, during,
after athletic events and within their training
regimens.
We realize that an injury can take an athlete (both amateur
and professional) out of the picture and out of their sport so we
continually watch for areas that may be vulnerable to injury.
For the weekend athlete, the main purpose of sports massage is to help
alleviate the stress and tension which builds up the body's soft
tissues during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions
occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse, massage can break them down
quickly and effectively. Sports massage can help prevent those nagging
injuries that so often get in the way of performance and achievement,
whether a person is an extreme athlete or a once a week jogger.
Sports massage can assist recovery from an injury that has already
occurred. Sports massage in contrast to relaxation massage is more
vigorous to stimulate circulation allowing greater blood to the muscles
for optimal performance. After exercise, the massage will assist in the
removal of toxins (lactic acids) that build up in the muscles during
exercise.
Each type of sport has different demands on the players. Each sport
uses muscle groups in a different way. Sports massage is designed to
address those specific concerns and may differ according to the sport
the athlete plays. Sports massage can be aimed to help foster faster
healing of strained muscles or allow healthy ones to reach peak
performance and maintain them while minimizing the risk of injury.
Sports massage can also include pre-event, post-event and maintenance
techniques that promote greater athletic endurance and performance,
lessen chances of injury and reduce recovery.
